References DOI: 10.5935/abc.20150054 Dear Editor, The study by Nascimento et al.1 provides information on the effects of physical training and the Heart Rate Variability (HRV) in patients with Chagasic heart disease. Changes in HRV were not observed after exercise intervention, but the intervention group showed improved functional capacity after 12 weeks of the study. Changes in the autonomic nervous system are observed in Chagasic heart disease and although physical training can improve HRV in other forms of heart failure, evidence suggests it does not happen in Chagasic heart disease2, corroborating findings by Nascimento et al1. However, in addition to the relatively few studies on the subject, which limits further conclusions, questions related to exercise prescription in the present study need to be better clarified. Although the protocol was established through a previous publication of a randomized clinical trial on the subject3, the lack of description on drug use by the study subjects such as beta blockers, which can have an effect on chronotropism, reducing the heart rate, might have altered the study outcome. Therefore, formulas that estimate the intensity of training, such as the one used in the aforementioned study, become limited in the presence of drugs with chronotropic interaction.

The Response of Hematological Factors to Home-Based Exercise Rehabilitation and Center-Based Cardiac Rehabilitation in Coronary Artery Disease

Background: Hematological disorders such as increased white blood cells and platelets (elevated white blood cell and platelets) in coronary heart disease (CHD) are associated with increased mortality. Exercise could specifically influence hematologic factors. The purpose of this study was to survey the response of hematological factors to home-based exercise rehabilitation and center-based card...

Carlos Chagas Discoveries as a Drop Back to Scientific Construction of Chronic Chagas Heart Disease

The scientific construction of chronic Chagas heart disease (CCHD) started in 1910 when Carlos Chagas highlighted the presence of cardiac arrhythmia during physical examination of patients with chronic Chagas disease, and described a case of heart failure associated with myocardial inflammation and nests of parasites at autopsy. He described sudden cardiac death associated with arrhythmias in 1...

Effect of physical exercise training in patients with Chagas heart disease: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial (PEACH study)

BACKGROUND The effects of exercise training on Chagas heart disease are still unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of exercise training over functional capacity, cardiac function, quality of life, and biomarkers in Chagas heart disease. METHODS The PEACH study is a superiority randomized clinical trial which will include subjects who meet the following criteria: Chagas heart disea...

Carvedilol: A Promising Drug Combined with Lipid-lowering Medications for Patients with Hypertension and Heart Failure

Background: Statins frequently cause myopathy especially in combination with fibrates, and physical activity is considered a trigger for the muscle disorder. Elevated plasma levels of creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and aldolase, are the main indicators of the severity of myopathy. Carvedilol is commonly used with lipid-lowering drugs in the management of heart failure, hypert...

Cardiovascular function in elderly patients with chronic chagasic cardiopathy.

The objective of this work was to verify the degree and type of heart damage of elderly chagasic patients seen at an outpatient referral center and to compare them with the changes found in young chagasic patients with a similar degree of heart damage. Elderly and young patients without advanced cardiopathy presented good functional behavior. Elderly patients with advanced cardiopathy had more ...
